What is TMJ and TMD?

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the sliding hinge joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. It’s responsible for all of the movements you make when talking, chewing, or yawning. TMD is short for temporomandibular joint disorder and describes dysfunction of this joint leading to pain and discomfort. While there are several potential causes for TMJ disorder, some of the most common include grinding or clenching your teeth, arthritis, misalignment, a dislocated jaw joint, or injury to the jawbone.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

The most common symptom of TMJ disorder is TMJ pain. This is often a painful sensation when chewing or opening your mouth. Here are several other symptoms of TMJ disorder to look out for:

Lack of jaw mobility or jaw stiffness
Pain that spreads to the neck, shoulders, or ears
Misalignment of the way the upper and lower jaw fit together
