Different Types of Tooth Fractures
We want our patients to feel comfortable and informed when it comes to their dental health, which is why we take the time to explain the types of fractures you may have in your teeth.
There are five different types of tooth fractures:
- Craze lines (hairline cracks): These are the smallest fractures, often forming in response to bruxism (teeth grinding) or minor trauma.
- Fractured cusps: This type of fracture occurs when a piece of tooth structure is broken off, usually from biting down on something too hard.
- Cracked teeth: A cracked tooth is typically caused by a large cavity, extensive dental work, or trauma like an auto accident.
- Split teeth: This fracture starts at the surface of the tooth and moves down to the roots, splitting a tooth into two pieces.
- Vertical root fractures: These fractures typically start from the root and move up through the crown of the tooth.

Tooth Colored Composite Fillings
At Lake Olympia Dental, we use composite tooth colored fillings to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay. These white composite materials are made from BPA free plastic and glass particles and can be closely matched to the color of your natural teeth. Unlike traditional silver amalgam fillings which were commonly used in the past, composite resin fillings blend in with your smile for a more aesthetic look. Composite fillings provide patients with a long lasting seal against tooth decay, which can help to prevent more complex procedures like dental crowns or root canal therapy. We strive to use the best materials and techniques available to create beautiful, healthy smiles for our patients.
Cracked Tooth Repair Process
Depending on the severity of the crack, there are several different methods that can be used to repair a cracked tooth. We may use dental bonding, which involves applying a special resin material to the damaged tooth in order to rebuild it. This is typically used for hairline cracks or small chips. Dental crowns are also sometimes used to repair cracked molars, as they can provide more stability for the affected tooth. Porcelain veneers may also be utilized if the crack is extensive and needs a big change in appearance.
In some cases, a cracked tooth may need root canal therapy. This is used to remove the damaged nerve tissue and protect the remaining healthy tooth structure. In more severe cases, extraction of the affected tooth may be necessary.

DO I NEED CRACKED TOOTH REPAIR IF I'M NOT IN PAIN?
A cracked tooth may not always be painful. But even if you don’t feel any discomfort, it is important to repair broken teeth as soon as possible. A fracture, even one that appears like a hairline crack, can put a tooth at risk for more serious damage without treatment.
Early recognition and repair is essential for preserving your teeth for years to come. A skilled dentist like Dr. Dinh at Lake Olympia Dental can assess the severity of your cracked tooth and recommend the right treatment to repair it.
