At Lake Olympia Dental, your trusted family dentist in Missouri City, TX, we understand that tooth extractions can be a daunting prospect. Whether you’re preparing for an upcoming extraction or recovering from one, following proper care instructions is crucial for a smooth and successful healing process. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the essential dos and don’ts before and after a tooth extraction to ensure optimal oral health and a comfortable recovery.

Before the Tooth Extraction

  • Do communicate with your dentist: Prior to the extraction, openly discuss any concerns or medical conditions with your dentist. Providing a complete medical history and disclosing medications you’re taking will help them tailor the treatment to your specific needs.
  • Do follow pre-operative instructions: Your dentist will provide pre-operative guidelines, such as fasting requirements and medication adjustments. Adhering to these instructions will help prevent complications during the procedure.
  • Don’t smoke: If you’re a smoker, it’s essential to refrain from smoking for at least 24 hours before the extraction. Smoking can impair blood flow and delay healing.
  • Don’t consume alcohol: Avoid alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before the extraction, as alcohol can interfere with anesthesia and increase bleeding risks.

After the Tooth Extraction:

  • Do follow post-operative instructions: Your dentist will provide detailed post-operative care instructions. Follow them diligently to promote healing and minimize the risk of complications. These instructions may include guidelines on pain management, oral hygiene, and dietary restrictions.
  • Do apply ice packs: To reduce swelling and minimize discomfort, gently apply ice packs to the affected area for 15 minutes at a time, with 15-minute breaks in between. This can be done for the first 24 to 48 hours after the extraction.
  • Don’t disturb the extraction site: Avoid touching or probing the extraction site with your tongue, fingers, or any objects. It’s important to allow the blood clot to form and protect the healing area from infection.
  • Don’t engage in strenuous activities: Limit physical activities for the first few days after the extraction to prevent bleeding or dislodging the blood clot. Rest and take it easy to aid the healing process.
  • Do practice good oral hygiene: Gently brush your teeth and tongue, but avoid the extraction site during the initial 24 hours. After that, rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) after meals to keep the area clean.
  • Don’t consume hard, crunchy, or sticky foods: Stick to a soft-food diet for the first few days after the extraction. Avoid hot liquids and foods that require excessive chewing, as they can irritate the extraction site and impede healing.

I had such a great experience at this new dental office! Mia was so friendly and handled my X-rays with so much care. She made the whole process quick and comfortable. Dr. Dinh was incredibly thorough and gentle. He took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure I felt completely comfortable during my visit. Shannon explained the insurance coverage clearly and patiently, making everything so easy to understand.

Dr. Dinh and his staff were amazing and they made the office a very welcoming and safe environment. I came in for a check up and teeth cleaning and was able to get 2 teeth extracted the same day as well.

I was in serious discomfort and needed relief for my pain. Dr. Dinh was extremely professional and diagnosed my problem quickly. The procedure was done with professionalism and was painless. I would recommend Lake Olympia Dental and Dr. Dinh to anyone that's having teeth issues immediately.

I decided to visit Lake Olympia Dental because the office is closew to home and I saw all the positive reviews, and I can see why! It was a seamless experience for being a new patient. Dr. Dinh and his staff were very personable, making sure you're at easy and having an enjoyable experience. They know their stuff and know how to make your visit smooth and efficient. The office is brand new, very clean and modern. My first time seeing a TV on the ceiling for patients to watch as you're getting your teeth cleaned. They also give you a warm face towel at the end to help freshen up. I sometimes forgot I was at the dentist.

I scheduled an emergency appointment today due to severe tooth pain and was able to be seen the same day. The office staff were very friendly and efficient, and the facility was new and clean. I appreciated how quick, yet thorough, my visit was. Most of all, I'm grateful for their late office hours, which made it possible for me to come in during the evening.
